Some facts -
Apprenticeship
leads to:
· Good
employment prospects
· Accessibility
for further learning
· Solid
foundation to a lifelong career
· Possible business start-ups
By now you should be aware of the value employers give to work
experience. Work experience within an apprenticeship is beneficial to you, as
you find out what working in your selected occupation is all about.
As an
apprentice you can really get the best of both worlds. While you study for your
vocational qualifications you will also be gaining experience while earning
money.
How does an apprenticeship work?
An
apprenticeship consists of on-the-job and off-the-job training. During an
apprenticeship you will spend periods of time at one of the Institutes within
MCAST or ITS to acquire the underpinning knowledge needed in your chosen
occupation. You will be spending the rest of the time at the employer's
premises to acquire hands-on practice. The amount and pattern of time varies
from one occupation to another.
What kind
of benefits am I to expect?
There are
various benefits from following an apprenticeship. One such benefit is the
facilitation of your transition from school to the labour market. Through an
apprenticeship you acquire competence. You will also acquire all the relevant
knowledge, skills and attitude needed for your chosen occupation. Moreover you
will be paid for it. Part of this remuneration will be supported by the
government and the rest by the employer. The rates will vary according to the
occupation and length of the apprenticeship.
What other
benefits will I be entitled to?
As you will be in employment,
you will benefit from all the other conditions of employment enjoyed by your
co-workers like vacation leave, sick leave, injury leave, marriage leave,
bereavement leave and statutory bonuses, but on a pro-rata basis. From your end
you will also have to pay National Insurance Contributions but not income tax.
What kind of certificates will I acquire at the end
of the apprenticeship?
You will
acquire recognition for what you achieve, be it on-the-job and/or off-the-job
competence.
At the end
of an apprenticeship all apprentices are invited to sit for a Trade Test.
Persons that are professionals in the chosen occupation conduct the test. If
you pass this test you will be awarded the Journeyman's Certificate, which is
at present Malta's official national certificate of competence. In the meantime
you would have also acquired a technical certificate from MCAST, ITS, BTEC or
City and Guilds.
What will happen to me after the apprenticeship?
After the
apprenticeship it will be your responsibility to renegotiate your employment
and the terms and conditions. However experience has shown that over 85% of the
persons who successfully completed an apprenticeship are presently engaged in
full-time employment whilst some of the others have even set up their own
business. Only a few experience unemployment and when this happens it is only
for a short time due to changes in the labour market.
Am I eligible for an apprenticeship?
If you are
accepted by MCAST or ITS to follow one of the training programmes that are
supported by the apprenticeship framework you may apply for an apprenticeship.
What happens after I apply?
By the time
you apply the Corporation would have already started to contact employers
inviting them to employ persons like you. You can contact employers who take on
apprentices and see if they are willing to employ you on an apprenticeship
basis.
Employment
is not automatic. It is up to the employer to decide whether you are the right
person or not. You may be asked to sit for an interview and/ or a number of
tests to make sure that you can meet their requirements.
How long will my apprenticeship be?
This
depends very much on the occupation you wish to embark upon. However an
apprenticeship will always be at least 18 months long but can take up to even
36 months.
